Southern California Golf Guide

Summertime means more golfers are out and about enjoying the game. I’ve been surrounded by golf lately so I thought I’d put together a short guide with links for this peak of the season. Since I’m in Los Angeles, this quick guide just covers some of the available golf in Southern California.

I was turned on to this first site the other day and found it to be quite useful. The Los Angeles Times has put together a guide for courses in the county. In addition, the list includes six other counties including Orange County golf courses, Ventura County golf courses, Riverside County golf courses, and San Bernardino County golf courses. The guide includes yardage, par, green fees, and whether a cart is included in the fees. Information is alphabetical and there is also a clickable map with most of the public courses around. I noticed a few were missing, but this is still a rather comprehensive list.

In case you missed it, I put together a list of five Los Angeles County driving ranges that I have actually tried myself. I wrote a post for Golf WRX that talks about three public courses I have visited as well. These are located in Los Angeles and Orange County. Each of these and the driving ranges are all public access.

By the way, if you haven’t done this already – you should check out the forums on Golf WRX. You can find answers to a lot of your questions about clubs, courses, and other golf-related topics there. If you don’t see an answer, start your own thread and you’ll get plenty of feedback.

If you need golf lessons in the Los Angeles area, there are two instructors at the Lakes at El Segundo that are recommended. Jennefer Jones is an LPGA certified instructor and the head pro. Aubrey Shaw is also one that students of the game enjoy. In Long Beach, Paul Young is a Class A Certified PGA Professional. He can be found at the Long Beach Golf Learning Center. This is the 80-tee facility that has grass and mat tees, putting greens, and a Roger Dunn shop.

Don’t forget to get your stylish golf attire from local Southern California company 13th Green so you look sharp on the course. Oh, and so you all know that I’m not a total golf punk, I actually found a pair of Ashworth golf pants and a hat that were really cool. Yes, that means I bought them both. The company’s recent ads seem to be aiming for an audience that is a bit more “hip” than their usual target. I know this may be a shock to those of you that read my post on golf style last week. I’m just hoping that the clothes are indeed becoming more hip and I’m just not showing the signs of aging. Uh oh, I do like to eat dinner early and I’m not afraid to bust out a coupon…

I'll be hitting more courses around Southern California over the summer to tell you about. Check back here or at the Golf WRX site for the rundown.

I still haven't golfed this summer, too busy doing other things. And I could really benefit from a golf lesson!

You should check and see where you could pick up a free 10 minute lesson in your area to start - actually, I'll see if I can find a good list somewhere. Many times, you can pick up a short lesson at a demo day or other golf show.
